SUPERB QUALITY O/U SWIVEL BREECH FLINTLOCK GUN BY
ALLEVIN OF PARIS EX. WILLIAM KEITH NEAL COLLECTION. Cal. 20 Bore. S# NSN. Most likely made by Jean Babtiste Claude Allevin who was working in Paris between 1750-96, who was presumably the son of Tristan who died in 1747. This attractive gun has 33-1/4" rotating barrel set with barrels being octagonal at breech ends and transitioning to 16 sided toward muzzles. Top flats of barrels are gold inlaid with acanthus scroll surrounding "Allevin Paris". Breech ends are also fitted with front portions of locks with integral faceted pans, unbridled friction frizzens and feather springs with bulbous finials. Serpentine cock is on rear portion of lock which has heavy faceted plate with rebated tail. Maker's name and address are on plate behind cock. Barrels rotate and are indexed in place with release mechanism actuated by squeezing front portion of trigger guard bow. Roman nose buttstock of fiddle figured European walnut is iron mounted and comb is fitted with tacked on leather pad. Relief carved finial of steel trigger guard has been cut to accommodate pad. All furniture is very nicely carved and engraved with vignettes of game animals. Barrel set has inset wooden sides which are pinned to barrels with side bolts. One side holds green heart ramrod with horn tip which mounts through two beaded steel pipes and matching thimble. CONDITION: good. Most metal parts show light cleaning to silver gray patina with many minor splotches and light pitting scattered on barrels. Stocks exhibit a very old oil finish with numerous light marks with considerable softening of raised carving and drop points. Bores appear to be good although dusty. Mechanically good. Finial of one feather spring missing. With original W. Keith Neal Collection tag attached (G100). (01-21987/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,500-5,500.
