Walter Reder was a major in the SS 3rd Panzer Division "Totenkopf" and later, the 16th SS Panzer Grenadier Division "Reichsfuhrer SS". He commanded several sub units of the Totenkopf division on the Eastern Front until 1943 where he was transferred to the new Reichsfuhrer SS division and given command of the SS Panzer Aufklarungsabteilung 16 where these units would participate in anti partisan warfare in Northern Italy. Reder would give the direct orders to destroy the village of Marzabotto and over 700 people would be executed in what would become the Marzabotto Massacre. Reder would be sentenced to life in prison of his war crimes in Italy and was imprisoned in the Gaeta fortress prison. In the prison, he would correspond with collector Michael Clifton and these are some of the letters, along with translations and the envelops from Reder with Italian postage stamps. Included is a signed photo of Walter Reder. Lettering on letters is clear and legible. Some letters are yellow with age and have some minor stains on them.
