RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 514515. Bbl. 32". Buffington rear sight marked "R". Blade front sight. These rifles were produced to accommodate a number of improvements including the integral rod bayonet, the 1 piece trigger guard & improved hammer nose plus a trap buttplate which originally held a cleaning kit and headless shell extractor. Low arch breech block is marked on top "U.S. MODEL 1884". Flat lockplate w/ eagle marked "US SPRINGFIELD". 3 position tumbler. Long comb walnut stock retained by 2 bbl. bands. Stock is marked on left side w/ boxed "SWP 1891". Buttstock is marked on top by buttplate tang w/ "66 G". Marked on right side "69". Upper band carries sling & stacking swivel. One piece trigger guard has sling swivel at forward end of trigger guard bow. 35 1/2" rod bayonet w/ 2 sets of locking shoulders. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: headless shell extractor in butt trap. CONDITION: original finish stock has wear, staining & handling marks throughout leaving legible markings. The rifle is likely a restoration as the rear sight, breech plug & bayonet have notably more original blue than the balance of parts which are turning gray & patina. Shiny bore w/ sharp lands & scattered pitting throughout. (01-22684/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-700.
