SPANISH AMERICAN WAR UNIFORM GROUPING BELONGING TO
LIEUTENANT J.D.A. ONDERDONK OF THE NEW YORK NATIONAL GUARD. This fine group consists of a US M1899 cotton khaki uniform with 4 flap pockets on the front that close with small eagle eye buttons. There are 5 large eagle eye buttons down the front of the uniform. The shoulder tabs are faced in blue and have gold bullion American eagles & silver bullion 1st Lieutenant’s bars. The standing collar has false embroidered crossed rifles with the number “2” above and the letters “USV” on each side. The pants that accompany the uniform are also khaki cotton, but of a slightly tanner shade. The fly closes with 4 sew-through buttons that each have 4 holes. Similar buttons are used as suspender buttons at the waist. A cotton web Mills style cartridge belt with a hound dog brass buckle in also included. The group also has a US M1874 belt & buckle with a central “US” within an oval on the buckle. The belt includes a small pistol cartridge box with impressed “US” in oval on the front, and a holster also showing an impressed “US” in oval on the front. Finally, the group includes a presentation grade US M1860 staff & field officer’s sword measuring 36” overall with a 29” blade. The blade is etched over 2/3 of its length with various foliate, military & patriotic motifs, including a panel that reads, “J.D.A. Onderdonk.” The ricasso is marked “SHANNON, MILLER & CRANE NEW YORK, N.Y.” Gilded brass hilt with a single kidney-shaped guard showing an American eagle & a spray of flags. Plain, slightly downturned quillon, and a knuckle bow decorated with stands of arms. Eagle embellished pommel, wire-wrapped sharkskin grip & gold bullion sword knot. Plated scabbard with very ornate gilded brass mounts. Scabbard is etched “Lieut. J.D.A. Onderdonk, from Co. B, 23d Reg’t. N.G.S.N.Y. May 3d 1893.” CONDITION: uniform coat shows light overall wear. The pants show moderate wear with some staining. Web belt shows light wear. Leather belt & accoutrements show use with some flaking, but remain strong. Sword blade has a cleaned light gray patina with scattered evidence of pitting. The hilt is quite loose and retains areas of original gilded finish. The grip & wire are complete. The knot shows moderate to heavy wear. Scabbard mounts retain 50% of their original gilded finish. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18760/BF). $800-1,200.
