SOLID PEWTER ON WOOD BASE, HIGH QUALITY AMERICAN CRAFTSMANSHIP

Sons of the Confederacy by Francis J. Barnum is one of his Civil War-themed limited-edition pewter sculptures produced during the height of the Chilmark Fine Pewter era. Like many of Barnum’s Confederate subjects, the piece focuses on Southern military identity, battlefield camaraderie, and memorial-style presentation.
The title Sons of the Confederacy reflects the broader tradition of commemorating Confederate soldiers and Southern heritage that became popular in Civil War collectibles during the late 20th century. Many Barnum pieces were marketed toward Civil War history collectors and reenactment enthusiasts

HISTORY:
“Sons of the Confederacy” is most commonly associated with the Sons of Confederate Veterans, an organization founded in 1896 to preserve the history and memory of Confederate soldiers who fought in the American Civil War.

The group was formed by descendants of Confederate veterans after the war ended in 1865. Its goals included:

honoring Confederate soldiers,
preserving battlefield sites and monuments,
collecting historical records,
and promoting Southern heritage and genealogy.

The organization grew during the late 1800s and early 1900s, a period when many Civil War memorials and veterans’ groups were being established across the South.

Today, the group remains active but is also controversial because Confederate symbols and memorials are tied to the history of slavery, secession, and racial discrimination in the United States. Different people view Confederate remembrance in very different ways:

some see it as preserving family and regional history,
while others see Confederate symbolism as inseparable from the defense of slavery and later segregationist movements.

Francis Barnum’s sculpture reflects the late-20th-century interest in Civil War commemorative art and historical military collectibles, particularly among collectors focused on Confederate history.
