SCARCE US MODEL 1900 KRAG-JORGENSON
EXPERIMTENTAL BOWIE BAYONET WITH SCABBARD. 1 of only 2,000-2,800 Model 1900 experimental bowie knife bayonets manufactured by Springfield Armory in 1900 for the US military's Krag-Jorgensen rifles. Approximately 1,500 of these bayonets were shipped over seas to the Phillipines, with the remaining 500 being shipped to Cuba for field testing. Designed to be utilized as both a bayonet and entrenching tool, field testing inevitably showed that the design proved to be ineffective both a bayonet or entrenching tool, with most examples finding more use as machetes for soldiers in the Phillipines, than that of their intended purpose. This example is stamped "US". on right side side of the ricasso, with "1900" stamped on the left. Clip point bowie blade features a V-ground cutting surface on the rear edge and measures 9" in length, with an overall length of 13 5/8". Blade has been cleaned and polished at one time. Handle consists of a straight cross guard with 2 piece riveted smooth wood grips, and a bird heads pommel. Proper blued steel scabbard with swivel hanger and ball tip drag. CONDITION: blade exhibits a mildly pitted surface, having been cleaned and polished overall. Markings remain sharp. Blade face exhibits a loss towards the center, but otherwise is good overall. Grips show a couple marks form handling and storage, but are otherwise very good overall. Scabbard retains large amounts of its original blue finish, exhibiting wear and thinning that show through to gray patina, with scattered spots of cleaned oxidation and some surface oxidation overall. PROVENANCE: From the estate collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (02-19735/MLW). $1,500-2,250.
