Offered for bidding on this lot is a set of four S. Newhouse Number 4 Wolf Traps, circa 1895-1911. These traps have a jaw spread of, 6 1/2 inches. It is a favorite with those who trap and hunt for a living in the Northwest and Canada. It is also extensively used for trapping the smaller wolves and coyotes in the western stock raising regions. These extremely versatile traps will hold almost any game up to a small black bear. Each trap is stamped on the pan with "S. Newhouse - Oneida Community N.Y. - No. 4". The condition of these traps varies from fair - good. Two of the four are stamped on the pan with "Pat SEPT. 2611", one is close to illegible, and the fourth does not show a patent date. One trap still has its original drag chain, while the rest are believed to have add-on chains. Each trap measures approximately 18" long without the length of the chain, 4 1/2" tall, and 5 3/8" deep at the width of the catch.
