The lot features an exceedingly rare original Simeon Coon and R.M. Bacon Percussion Alarm Gun dating to circa 1850’s. The firearm shows a .25 caliber with 2.5 inch round barrel and is marked, “S. COON / PATENT / FOR R.M. BACON / MOORFIELD, ILL.” The firearm was designed to be attached to a door or window frame and to strike a blank firing charge when the door/window is disturbed or opened, alerting any nearby to the entry. Unlike other examples of the S. Coon manufacture Percussion Alarm Guns available for public sale that are nearly all .22 caliber and only marked with the S. Coon, this example is in the scarcely seen .25 caliber and has the additional manufacture mark of R.M. Bacon possibly of Bacon Firearms Manufacturing Company. S. Coon (or Simeon Coon) manufactured the alarm guns in Ithaca, New York in the 1850’s with a patent number of 18,236. In this example it shows the spring, which is shown resting on the nipple in the fired position, it itself being the hammer. Unit consists of spring & wood screw held to bbl. by U shaped clamp that engages notch on spring when cocked. Rock Island Auction Company valued an S. Coon Alarm Gun in their May 2011 sale at $2,250.00. No Serial Number, Antique Firearms Pre-1898 Requires NO FFL and NO NICS Background check.
