Royal quality wheelock carbine of diminutive size showing finely inlaid stock, with maker’s hallmark barrel showing the initials “C.G.” with the figure of what appears to be a lobster with a man’s head stamped at breech. The carbine measures 25-3/4” overall with 17-5/8” barrel of approx. .45 caliber rifled. The gun shows extremely high quality inlay with figures of winged nudes, grotesque faces, tight scrolls, with saxon type dots and flowers, mythical beasts, stags, scrolls, snails, demons, figure of lady justice holding a sword, and typical 17th century motifs. The inlay was accomplished by a master, probably at a royal workshop. The inlay is 98% intact with a couple of small losses and a couple small areas of very minor restorations that are almost imperceptible. The stock is in near fine untouched original condition. The metal surfaces are uncleaned. The lock is well made and retains its original parts and is complete. The cock or hammer shows a whimsical man’s head and there is also a face engraved on the safety. Otherwise, the metal is plain as not to clash with the intricate inlays in the stock.
