Royal quality valuables box probably German circa 1625 to 1675 fully and finely chiseled and engraved with dragons, scrolls, florals, urns and finest quality period detail with engraved bottom and fully worked around sides and top. The key mechanism is simple and of that period and a working key is included. There appears to be a small cartouche or makers mark on the bottom plate which shows a lead filled area at the center originallyintended to accept a key. The bottom plate and small feet were added during the period and this box was made this way as good parts were not discarded. The chiseled work on the box is reminiscent of the finest work of the period such as arms decorated at the Munich Royal workshop and the same artist decorated boxes, arms and metal objects. The box measures approx. 2-5/8" in height by approx. 4-3/8" in width. To hand make and engrave abox of this quality would be expensive at any point in time and only important personages would have gold or jewels to put in such a box. Est.;$4,000-$8,000.
