Featured in this lot we have a Rochester Root Beer soda barrel dispenser originating from the 1950's to 1960's. JHS and Rochester Root Beer were started by J. Hungerford Smith around the turn of the last Century in New York. Smith had developed a way of preserving fruit juices and making syrups for year-round use. He also developed his own root beer syrup and marketed his syrups to other drugstore owners. His syrups were of high quality and his Rochester Root Beer brand was well renowned. A&W Root Beer started making their root beer in California in the 1920's using syrup from J. Hungerford Smith (JHS). In 1963, The J. Hungerford Smith Company purchased the A&W Company , retaining the A&W name. The Rochester Root Beer trademark was last owned by A&W. The barrel shows oak construction with steel bands and bottom. The front shows a black and red decal with gold lettering reading "Rochester Root Beer 5 c" along with a notice sticker. The top and side shows metal internals and dispensing systems. The piece shows good condition overall with the side plate missing. The piece measures 28" tall with a diameter of approximately 17".
