Robins, Kendall & Lawrence Model 1841 Percussion Rifle

Model 1841 "Mississippi" Rifle manufactured in 1849 by Robins, Kendall & Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont, as part of a 10,000 rifle contract with the Ordnance Department. The rifle has a browned barrel, casehardened hammer and lock plate. The stock is oil-finished black walnut. The stock has the distinctive over-sized brass patch box and brass buttplate, trigger guard, side plate, lower barrel band and upper barrel band. The barrel has a small brass half-moon front sight and dovetail mounted fixed rear sight. The barrel is in original configuration with no bayonet lug. The rifle retains the original steel shank ramrod with flared brass tip. The lock plate is flat with beveled edges and is marked "WINDSOR/1849" in two vertical lines behind the hammer. "ROBINS & LAWRENCE/U.S." is stamped in two lines in front of the hammer. The top of the barrel is stamped with the inspector initials "JPC" above a "P" proofmark perpendicular to the axis of the bore. "U.S." is stamped in small letters on the heel of the buttplate. The left stock flat is stamped with the Ordnance final inspection stamp which consists of the script initials "WAT" with an oval border and the Ordnance Sub-Inspector's stamp which consists of three script initials in a rectangle with rounded ends. "C" or "M" sub-inspector's marks are stamped on the brass components. The Model 1841 Rifle gained fame as the weapon used with distinction by the 1st Mississippi Rifles led by Col. Jefferson Davis at the Battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican War and was widely issued to both regular Army and state militia units before the Civil War. Many M1841 rifles were altered to accept the .58 caliber Minie bullet and fitted with bayonet lugs and long range sights prior to the Civil War. During the Civil War the Mississippi rifle was a widely issued and popular weapon in both the Federal and Confederate armies.

Good as refurbished/remarked (maker's marking on lock plate). The rifle retains mostly refinished brown on the barrel; the balance of the barrel an even brown patina. The restamped lock plate and hammer have a deep brown patina. The surface of the lock plate is generally smooth but the hammer, bolster and percussion nipple have heavy flash pitting. The markings on the lock plate and barrel are light but legible. The brass furniture has been polished and covered with protective lacquer and is very good. The stock is in good condition. The edges surrounding the lock plate are rounded but other areas of the stock show only moderate handling wear. The Ordnance inspection marks on the left flat are partially legible and the "WAT" final inspection mark is clear.
