Robert Johnson Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol

Estimate: $850 - 1300
Manufactured in 1842 by Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. Robert Johnson manufactured an estimated 18,000 Model 1836 Pistols under government contracts between 1836 and 1844. The Model 1836 pistol was the primary handgun issued by the U.S. Army during the Mexican War and many were converted to percussion and used during the Civil War. The pistol has the distinctive swivel ramrod and combination barrel band/side plate. The barrel, and iron furniture are finished bright and the lock plate, hammer, frizzen and barrel tang were casehardened. The lock plate has a beveled front and rounded rear and is fitted with a reinforced hammer and detachable brass pan. The lock plate is marked "U.S./R.JOHNSON/MIDDN CONN/1842" and "U.S/JCB/P" is stamped on the top of the barrel at the breech, with an "H" on the flat. There is also a small "H" stamped on the lower tang ahead of the trigger guard. Mounted with a walnut stock with a faint oval cartouche on the left flat. The Model 1836 Pistol was the last U.S. flint martial pistol and is generally considered to be the best U.S. military flintlock handgun.
