Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol manufactured in 1842 by Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. Robert Johnson manufactured an estimated 18,000 Model 1836 Pistols under government contracts between 1836 and 1844. The Model 1836 pistol was the primary handgun issued by the U.S. Army during the Mexican War. The pistol has the distinctive swivel ramrod and combination barrel band/side plate. The barrel, and iron furniture are finished 'National Armory Bright'. The lock plate, hammer, frizzen and barrel tang are casehardened. The stock is oil-finished black walnut. The lock plate has a beveled front and rounded rear and is fitted with a reinforced hammer and detachable brass pan. The lock plate is roll-stamped: "U.S./R.JOHNSON/MIDDN CONN/1842" in four lines. "U.S/JCB/P" is stamped on the top of the barrel. Oval Ordnance final and sub-inspection marks with script initials are stamped on the left stock flat. Small single letter Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on most major components.
