Remington Model 1875 Single Action Army revolver manufactured c. 1875-1889. The revolver has the distinctive web on the underside of the ejector housing and factory lanyard loop on the butt. The revolver has a blue finish with casehardened hammer and loading gate. The two-piece grips are walnut. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the one-line legend "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y. U.S.A." reading from the breech to muzzle. The batch number "120" is stamped on the lower left side of the frame beneath the grips and on the loading gate; "120" is written in pencil on the inside of both grips. The heel of the left grip is cut with five deep notches. Five notches are lightly filed in the back strap and top of the left grip near the junction of the grip and the frame. The notches are worn and contemporary to the revolver. The significance of the notches is not known. The Remington Model 1875 was intended to compete with the Colt Single Action Army revolver and it proved to be a well-designed and popular handgun. Remington manufactured an estimated 25,000-30,000 Model 1875 revolvers before production ceased in 1889.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 44-40 WCF
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 120
Condition: Good. The revolver retains 20% of the original blue finish in protected areas of the barrel, frame and cylinder. The balance of the metal surfaces have a smooth gray-brown patina. Traces of the casehardened finish are visible on the hammer and loading gate. The grips show moderate handling wear and are good. The original front sight blade has been removed and replaced with a dovetail mounted hand-made rifle style iron front sight that appears to be contemporary to the revolver. The ejector housing is missing the retaining screw. The barrel markings are faint. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. This is a good example of a Remington Model 1875 Single Action Army revolver that shows evidence of real Old West use.
