Remington Model 12 .22 Caliber Slide Action Rifle
Remington Model 12 rifle in caliber .22 Short, Long or Long Rifle. The Remington Model 12 is a slide-action, solid-breech, hammerless, takedown, side-ejection, repeating rifle that loads from a tubular magazine mounted under the barrel. This gun, designed by J. D. Pederson, was introduced in 1909 and produced through 1936. The gun featured a hammerless action and competed quite successfully with the 1906 Winchester which still had an exposed hammer. This fine example with serial number 218122 was probably made between 1913-1915. It features a 20” round barrel with original small buckhorn rear sight with blade front sight. The barrel is marked, “REMINGTON ARMS UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO. REMINGTON WORKS, ILION, N.Y., U.S.A.” along with “PEDERSON’S PATENTS” listed from 1909 through 1912. “REMINGTON TRADE MARK” and caliber designation is also clearly stamped on the barrel. As is correct for early Model 12 rifles, there are no markings on the receiver aside from the serial number on the bottom along with the small stamping “REMINGTON UMC” on the lower tang. This is a takedown rifle that was very popular when sportsmen took to the woods via bicycle, train or small water craft. A quick turn of the knurled takedown screw on the left side of the receiver allowed the barrel assembly to be separated from the receiver and butt stock for easy packing and storage. The takedown on this example is still tight and solid. The action also is tight and the sliding button safety behind the trigger works perfectly. The walnut stock and forend are both solid with the butt stock showing an attractive grain pattern. All metal surfaces show a most attractive aged blue. The bore is dark, but does still retain rifling. No doubt there are numerous adventure stories connected with this classic, 105 year old Remington that recently came out of Arizona. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
