Produced in 1979, the Premier, or F, grade was exclusively the product of the Remington Custom Shop, with masterfully hand-fitted components and superb embellishment. A product of unquestionable skill and dedication, the embellishment alone on an inlaid F Grade represents two weeks of attention from a master artisan. This particular example is signed by Robert P. Runge, master engraver. Robert Phoenix Runge started his engraving career with Parker Brothers, moving to Remington along with his father in 1934, retiring in 1979 to work on the restoration and embellishment of vintage Parker shotguns. White front and nickel mid bead sights, with a Remington Special Skeet choke, three line address and patent dates on the right side of the barrel, and the 2 3/4 inch chamber markings on the reverse. At the rear of the barrel is a 6 1/4" long section of fine scroll engraving, which extends forward to envelop the markings with decorative panels and terminates with a leaf border pattern. The receiver shows over 97% coverage of fine scrollwork, leafy vine border designs, a dog's head on the underside of the trigger guard, and a leaf design on the rear of the operating handle. A set of two banners are present on the left side, with "Remington MODEL 1100-SF" in the center, and the serial number on the right. Each side shows a three-panel game scene with golden inlays; a woodland scene on the left, with a pheasant and woodcock in flight in each of the side panels and 2 dogs (and the Runge signature) in the center, and the right side has a similar arrangement, with a grouse and quail in flight. Fitted with an extra fancy high grade walnut stock, featuring sharp checkering on the extended beavertail forearm and straight wrist, integrating spade and flare patterns into the border lines, a smooth black grip cap, an untouched gold inscription panel on the underside, 13 3/4" pull and serrated Remington buttplate.
BBL: 25 1/2 inch vent rib
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 12
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 538822V
Condition: Virtually new, with only the lightest of collector type handling marks, overall showing an appearance akin to a factory new arm. Every bit of the artist's craft shows through in the engraving, particularly in the game scenes, which are rendered to give a strong sense of depth and detail. There is a small spot on one of the birds on the left side that the gold has flaked off, otherwise the relief gold inlays are excellent, showing the fine attention to detail which is the hallmark of a master engraver. The wood is every bit the equal of the steel, with a deep, carved feel to the borders around the sharp checkering, and a degree of feathered and highlighted grain that is guaranteed to catch eyes. A top-rate Model 1100F Shotgun, possibly unmatchable in quality, from the James Tipton Collection.
