Rare pair of Colt 1860 armies with matching companion shoulder stock and inscribed on inside strap in period script presented by “S. A. Buell to J. R. Jones”. The pistols and stock remain in original fine to near excellent condition showing most of their original blue and case hardened finish. S.A. Buell and John R. Jones were Indian fighters in Minnesota and Dakota who saw significant action against insurgents commanded by Chief Little Crow. Buell was granted a commission as major of the 1st Minnesota cavalry on December 17th , 1862 for frontier duty against the Indians. The 1st cavalry saw action with Sibley’s expedition in the Dakota territory throughout 1863. John R. Jones was promoted from Sgt. to Capt. in actions defending Fort Ridgley from Indian attack. As a result of his bravery he was commissioned a captain in charge of the Minnesota 3rd light artillery in 1863. These officers continued to fight closely together in Indian actions from 1863 to 1866. All the actions occurred in the Minnesota and Dakota Territory. Pistol number 88559 shows approximately 85% to 95% original blue just starting to tone and age naturally with some scattered minor erosion and just beginning normal age. The cylinder shows 85% to 95% original cylinder scene with engagement dates showing on the edge. The frame and loading lever show 75% to 85% case hardening dulling just slightly and the back strap shows 75% to 85% blue. The trigger guard shows about 50% original silver plate. The grips show cartouches on each side and a coating of varnish but no sanding. There are some minor scratches and marks on the grips from the stock being attached. All matching visible serial numbers. The action is crisp and the interior is excellent with a bright bore. Shoulder stock number 88559 shows 50% to 70% original toning silver on yoke and butt plate with natural aging with correct attachment jaw and release screw. The attachment jaw is matching. The stock is fine to near excellent overall. Pistol number 88769 remains in nearly identical condition to its mate with 80% to 90% original blue slightly more erosion on the left side of the barrel with some minor marks and about 50% to 60% toning blue on the cylinder with 80% to 90% original cylinder scene. The frame, hammer and lever shows 75% to 85% bright and colorful case hardening just sarting to tone and age slightly. The trigger guard shows 50% to 60% darkened original silver plate. The grips like their companion show a coating of commercial varnish and one small loss to the left toe with a couple of bumps and marks from being attached to the stock but are at least very good plus overall and also show cartouches on both sides with no sanding and nearly a perfect fit. The action is crisp and the bore is near excellent and bright with all matching visible serial numbers. Very few sets of 1860 armies with shoulder stocks exist and it is this cataloger’s belief after 44+ years of selling and collecting fine Colts that this set was sent to Colt for the inscription as we recognized the hand of the engraver. At the time the two pistols were inscribed it is our belief that the grips were varnished but not sanded and the stock was silver plated as were the guards when returned to Colt for the inscriptions. We have absolutely no doubt as to their authenticity as being inscribed during the 19th century. We know of only three other pairs of 1860 Army Colts with shoulder stocks and inscribed. None of which bear a frontier era inscription relating to real Indian fighters. Est.: $70,000-$140,000.
