Rare over and under flintlock shotgun with Wender type turn barrels of French or Spanish origin circa about 1650 to 1680 in approximately 20 gauge smoothbore. The gun measures approximately 57 ½” overall with 42 ¾” barrels which are super imposed. The gun remains in original untouched condition showing a dark brown patina finish with original hammer and small parts. The stock is inlaid with fancy pierced brass decoration engraved with florals and also the trigger guard is engraved. The quality is very good with a beautifully made hammer and worked edge on frizzed springs and quality engraving around the breech and pan area. The wood has shrunk slightly and shows some exposure but is at least very good with some minor cracks, small losses and normal aging. The metal surfaces are completely un-cleaned and (out of the attic). An old collection tag is attached to the hammer which shows the name of J. R. Puleo, Norristown, PA. An old ramrod is retained. This rare and early shotgun has characteristics of both France and Spain but the hammer is very refined in the French tradition. Est.: $8,000-$16,000.
