Rare full stock percussion plains rifle by Jonathan Browning, father of John M. Browning, signed on barrel “J. Browning”, .43 caliber, 33-5/8” barrel, 49” overall full stocked to the muzzle in plain walnut, brass mounts, double set triggers, medium to light weight proportions. The rifle shows a simple hole in the butt for patches or caps, possibly grease. The stock shows a purposeful cut behind the rear ramrod thimble, probably for identification purposes. The condition is good to very good overall with a dark brown patina, some erosion and pinprick pitting, some light cleaning around the signature. A few nicks, small losses around the lockplate, normal wear and use. Notarized letter signed Charles Stewart Mcleod, notarized 5 Dec. 2008 states in summary that Charles Stewart Mcleod is a great great grandson of Jonathan Browning and a great grandson of Jonathan Moses Browning, the firearms inventor. John Browning’s 10th child, Elizabeth Caroline Browning Mcleod, was his grandmother, her son Stewart S. Mcleod was his father.
