Rare and Excellent Pre-World War II Colt 44 Russian and S&W Special Single Action Army Revolver with Original Box

Manufactured in 1924. This revolver is one of an estimated 506 Single Action revolvers chambered for the .44 S& W Special cartridge. The barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap have the Colt commercial blue finish. The frame, hammer and loading gate are casehardened. The two piece black hard rubber grips are checkered and are embossed with the Rampant Colt in an oval. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the legend "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.". The "O" in "Hartford" has a broken die. The left side of the barrel is roll stamped "RUSSIAN AND/S &W SPECIAL 44". The left side of the frame is roll stamped with the Colt three date, two line patent markings followed by the Rampant Colt. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "1599". The left front trigger guard bow is stamped with a "3" assembler's mark above the Colt "Triangle/VP" proofmark. The serial number "346938" is stamped on the bottom of the frame and on the right side of the trigger guard and back strap beneath the grip. The revolver is complete with the original royal blue cardboard box with the serial number "346938" written on the underside. The caliber designation "S. & W. CARTRIDGE." is printed on a tan and black label attached to the end of the box lid. A blue and white label on the end of the box bottom is marked "5 1/2 COLT'S ARM S.A. REVOLVER/RUBBER BLUE .44". Colt advertising labels are glued to the inside of the box lid and bottom. The box contains an original Colt "SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS" pamphlet.

Excellent plus. The revolver retains 99% of the original finish and shows only traces of storage and handling wear. The cylinder has only traces of drag marks. The case colors on the frame, loading gate and hammer are strong and show minor handling wear. The frame, trigger guard and grip screws are perfect. All of the markings are perfect. The grips are excellent plus. The box is fair. The front edge of the lid is missing and the front edge of the bottom is broken. The royal blue finish on the box edges and lid has scattered flaking. Both end labels are fine. The "SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS" pamphlet is oil soaked but remains good. This is an extraordinary example of a scarce pre-war Colt Single Action Army revolver chambered for the desirable .44 S&W cartridge with the original box. This is one of the most sought after caliber variations of the Colt Single Action Army Revolver!
