Rare and Desireable Cased Colt London Agency Single Action Flattop Target Revolver with Factory Letter

Colt Single Action Flattop Target Revolver with Colt Factory letter. The letter describes the revolver as a "Flattop Target Revolver" with 7 1/2-inch barrel, blue finish, "rubber" grips and notes that it was "Furnished with Military front sights". The letter further notes that this revolver was shipped to Colt's London Agency on September 18, 1890. The revolver has the Colt high polish blue finish on the barrel, cylinder, trigger guard, backstrap loading gate and frame. The hammer has a blued top with polished sides. The revolver features the distinctive flat top strap with dove-tail mounted target rear sight. The barrel has the special order, high profile, fixed, blued "military" front sight. The hammer has bordered, knurling on the spur. The trigger face is knurled. The ejector rod has the late, oval, head. The two piece black, hard rubber, checkered grips are embossed with the Eagle and Shield motif at the heel and the Rampant Colt trademark in an oval at the top. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend: "COLT"S PT. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A. DEPOT 14 PALL MALL LONDON" in a single line. The caliber, "450 ELEY." is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt "Three-Date/Three-Line" patent markings. The assembly number "86" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. A small "G" assembler's mark is stamped on the left front trigger guard bow and a small "S" sub-inspection mark is stamped in the hammer well. Small London "Crown/V" and "Crown/GP" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the underside of the barrel and above each cylinder chamber. The full serial number, "132773" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and backstrap. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver is accompanied by a British oak partition case. The case lid is reinforced with brass screws and has an round, brass, plate in the center. The case interior is lined with red baize and has a 33-round cartridge block and three compartments. The case contains: (1) screw-driver with ebony handle, (2) cleaning rod with brass tip and ebony head, (3) blued, L-shaped screw-driver, (4) cleaning attachments and (5) 41 .450 Eley cartridges. A Colt London Agency card is attached to the inside of the case lid. Records show Colt manufactured a total of 84 Single Action Flattop Target Revolvers that were chambered for the .450 Eley cartridge. Revolvers like this example with a factory case are rare.

Fine. The revolver retains 60% of the original high polish blue finish. The sides of the frame and grip strap have moderate handling wear and there is some light pitting on the left side of the frame, cylinder, top strap and recoil shield. The grips are in good overall condition with moderate handling wear, fading to brown on the heel of the left grip. The case is in very fine condition, with some minor dents and scratches and mild handling marks on the fine original baize lining. The accessories are in good condition. This is a fine example of a rare and desirable Colt London Agency Single Action Flattop Target Revolver with Colt Agency oak factory case.
