Rare and Desirable North & Skinner Revolving Rifle

Six shot revolving rifle manufactured by H.S. North and Edward Savage of Middletown, Connecticut, c. 1856-1859. Total production is estimated at about 600 rifles. The rifle has a distinctive combination trigger guard/cocking lever, external self-cocking hammer and partial shield that covers the top and front of the cylinder. The barrel has a folding two-position rear sight and a dovetail mounted iron rear sight. A flat sided loading lever is mounted beneath the barrel. The oil finished straight grain black walnut stock has a crescent steel buttplate and a round brass patch box on the left side. The top barrel flat is stamped "NORTH & SAVAGE MIDDLETOWN CONN. CAST STEEL" in one line. "PATENTED JUNE 1" 1852" is roll-stamped on the right barrel flat and "THE WORLD'S REVOLVER" is stamped on the left flat.

Good. This rare revolving rifle is all original and the complicated delicate action remains functional. The barrel, receiver, cylinder and buttplate have a silver-gray patina. The components have a scattered discoloration, light pitting and scattered dents and scratches. The barrel markings are light but legible. The stock is good overall with scattered dents and scratches. There is a two inch hairline crack on both sides of the stock that runs from the bottom of the patch box to the buttplate. North & Skinner revolving rifles are rare and desirable in any condition. This is a solid functional example of a very hard to find rifle.
