This is one of the estimated 1,000 Navy Model 1861 Signal Pistols manufactured at the U.S. Navy Yard, Washington, D.C. The design of this signal pistol is similar to the Army Model 1861 except that the barrel is cast integral with the right side. It used the Coston Light System which did not propel the flare into the air. The flare burned while affixed to the pistol, which acted as the igniter and receptacle for it. All brass construction except for the small parts. The frame halves are stamped with the number "1H". The left side of the frame is stamped "ORD DEPT/U.S.N.Y.W./1870" over an anchor and "F.M.R."
