Rare U.S. Martially Inspected Civil War C.S. Pettengill Army Model Percussion Revolver
This is an example of a U.S. Martially Inspected Army Model Pettengill double action revolver. 2,000 of the 3,400 produced were delivered to the Ordnance Department and the revolvers were issued to several Federal Cavalry regiments during the Civil War. The barrel has a brass cone front sight and the frame has a sighting groove. The revolver has a 6-shot un-fluted cylinder and hammerless frame. The top strap is marked: "PETTENGILLS / PATENT 1856" on the right side of the sighting groove and "PAT' JULY 22 1856 / JULY 27 1858" on the left side. The bottom of the frame ahead of the trigger guard is marked "PATENTED / NOV 4, 1862". The left barrel flat at the breech and the left side of the frame ahead of the cylinder are marked with "W W" inspection marks, "W" on the left side of the loading lever, a "D" on the bottom of the frame, and "WW" on the cylinder. The matching serial number is marked on the butt and cylinder. The revolver is fitted with two piece walnut grips with a faint boxed cartouche on the left panel and a "W" on the bottom of the each panel. Comes with a typed history of the Pettengill revolver from a noted authority/collector, Loren M Pattengill, dated July 27, 1964.

Condition: Very fine. The revolver retains 50% original blue finish mixed with smooth mottled brown patina. There are a few minor scratches on the upper left barrel flat and some scattered minor spotting. The grips are also very fine with a number of minor chips along the bottom edges and overall minor dents and dings. The action functions but needs minor work, the cylinder returns to the same position after cycling. The markings are clear.
