Rare U.S. Martially Inspected C.S. Pettengill Patent Double Action Army Revolver
Cone front and groove rear sights, with "PETTENGILLS/ PATENT 1856" on the right side of the sighting groove and "RAYMOND & ROBITAILLE / PATENTEE 1858" on the left side. The serial number is marked on the bottom of the butt. The left rear barrel flat, left side of the frame and cylinder are marked with a "WW" inspection mark. Fitted with smooth flared butt grips, with a faint cartouche on the left panel. A total of about 3,400 of these revolves were made in the early 1860s. In 1861 the U.S. Ordnance Department ordered 5,000, however after failing trials the order was changed to 2,000, June of 1862. The 3rd Michigan Cavalry was issued 500 and other units such as the 3rd and 5th Missouri Militia, 1st Arkansas and 3rd Illinois and Kentucky were issued less amounts. The revolver comes with a brief history of the Pettengill.

Condition: Good. The metal surfaces have a mottled brown patina with some minor pitting on the frame. The grips have had a coat of varnish applied and remain good with a few minor chips and nicks along the lower edges and a few minor handling marks. The action is in need of work, the cylinder does not lock up properly. The markings are legible.
