Rare Tower percussion police pistol Model of 1848 made for Irish constabulary and dated 1853 on right side of frame with British broad head proof marks in stock and V.R. and crown on left side of frame. The pistolmeasures 10” overall with 5” barrel of approximately .66 caliber smoothbore showing a center mounted large hammer and attached swivel ramrod. This gun was located in Australia and according to the letter fromnoted firearms expert Norm Flayderman,“It is strongly believed to have had a direct police or prison association with that country.” Also Blackmore’s book (edition of 1961) observes that this particular pistol is themost unusual of the percussion series and pictures it on the dust jacket. Also a letter from the Royal Armories in England mentions there was an original contract for 500 and all known to the curator bear the date of1848 and this may be the only 1853 marked example. This rare British martial pistol remains in very good original condition showing a gray to brown patina finish with some scattered light to moderate erosion and
