Also known as the "Old Model Russian", the Second Model saw the introduction of the pronounced backstrap knuckle and trigger guard spur which are seen as the Russian's signature features, with this particular example outfitted to accept the scarce detachable shoulder stock. This is an example of a fairly scarce group of revolvers (approximately 6,000) manufactured specifically for the domestic market, to which the words "RUSSIAN MODEL" were added to the rear of the barrel address, and falls in the serial number range of 32,800-39,000. The majority of these revolvers were purchased by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham and subsequently marked with their retailer mark "SH" in a diamond. The revolver bears that very mark which was cut through the serial number at the retailer when the revolver was sold. The stock itself is the proper Russian model with the distinctive steel buttplate. It is important to note that when stocked guns were sold to retailers factory letters will not often specify if the revolver was cut for a stock, considering Smith & Wesson charged no additional expense. Further, guns and stocks were sold seperately. It is in this writers opinion that bother are 100% authentic and the gun and stock have lived their entire life together. Pinned blade and notch sights, with the one line address and patent markings ending in "RUSSIAN MODEL" on the barrel rib, and matching assembly numbers of "441" on the barrel, latch and cylinder. Smooth grips, with the right panel numbered to the gun. The back strap is cut twice and the butt once to provide mounting slots for the stock, which is smooth walnut with unnumbered hardware and a smooth steel buttplate.
