Smith & Wesson Model 3 American Revolver ("First Model American") with S&W Factory letter. The letter states that this revolver is a scarce Transition Model. Transition Model serial number ranges are from approximately 6800-8000. Transition models are distinguished by a shorter, 1.423-inch, cylinder and a notch in the hammer for the interlocking barrel catch. The letter states that this revolver had an 8-inch barrel and smooth walnut grips and was shipped to M.W. Robinson of New York, N.Y., on February 8, 1872. M.W. Robinson was the largest S&W distributor. The revolver has the high polish S&W blue finish on the barrel, frame and cylinder. The hammer and trigger guard have a color case-hardened finish. The two-piece, black walnut, grips have an oil finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "+ SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A. PAT. JULY 10. 60. JAN.17. FEB. 17. JULY 11. 65 & AUG. 24. 69 +" in one line with Maltese crosses at either end. The serial number, "7378" is stamped on the butt, rear face of the cylinder and on the rear of the frame. All of the visible serial numbers match. The First Model American revolvers were the first S&W top-break revolvers and pre-dated the Colt Single Action by nearly three years. First Model American revolvers are known to have been carried by William F. (Buffalo Bill) Cody and other famous western figures.
BBL: 8 In
Stock:
Gauge: 44 S&W Amer
Finish: blue/case-hardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 7378
Condition: Very fine as partially restored. The sides and top of the barrel show patches of flaking and retain 70% of the original high polish blue finish. The cylinder has some minor flaking but retains 75% plus of the original blue finish. The frame and sideplates have been carefully refinished and are nearly indistinguishable from the original finish. It is our belief that this revolver was more then likely returned to the factory for the frame to be refinished prior to the factory stamping rework proofs. The hammer and trigger guard have 95% plus of the casehardened finish with vivid case colors. The walnut grips are in excellent condition and have minimal handling wear. The action functions perfectly. This is a scarce Smith & Wesson Transition First Model American revolver.
