This is one of approximately 650 Smith & Wesson 1 1/2 transition revolvers manufactured circa 1869. Reportedly, 450 of these revolvers were shipped to C.W. May for export to Japan, with about 200 shipped to J.W. Storrs. The serial range for these revolvers is 27,200 to 28,800. This revolver has the Old Model 5-shot unfluted cylinder and octagonal barrel with the New Model bird head grip frame. The top of the barrel rib is marked "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MAS./PAT'D APR. 3RD, 1855 & NOV 21 1865". The rear of the barrel lug is stamped "H8." Tip up frame, with spur hammer and rosewood bird head grips with the right panel numbered to the gun.

Condition: Fine. The revolver retains 30% original blue finish with the balance a smooth gray patina. The cylinder has some minor pitting. The grip is fine with some high edge wear and some minor handling marks with most of the varnish remaining. Mechanically fine. A rare often missing variations of an antique S&W 1 1/2!
