Rare Rock Island Arsenal U.S. 1881 Pattern Cavalry Holster with Experimental Belt Hook Assembly

Estimate: $2500 - 3500
This is an example of a regulation Type I Rock Island Arsenal 1881 Pattern holster manufactured circa 1881 and 1882. This holster introduced the truncated half flap with two adjustable buttons for finial closure so that it could be used with the Colt Single Action Army revolver with 7 1/2 inch barrel or the Smith & Wesson Schofield revolver. The holster is constructed of black bridle leather with a flap and belt loop riveted and sewn to the back and there is a toe plug. The front of the holster is embossed with "US" in an oval and the flap is marked "ROCK ISLAND/ARSENAL" above the holes and "D.C." and "JOH" below the holes. Comes with a 7 1/2 inch experimental belt with a brass hook on each end.
