Rare New Orleans Bowie knife marked manufactured for F. C. Goergen, New Orleans in fancy engraved script letters at the top rear of blade. F.C. Goergen was a commission merchant who worked in New Orleans between 1842 and 1849 when he died. Less than half a dozen of his knives are known all of them being etched with romantic slogans on the blades (refer Flayderman “The Bowie Knife” page 325) . This particular example has the most desirable etching which reads, “My Knife and Wife”. The blade is constructed of thick stock steel measuring 9 ¼” in length and the Bowie is approximately 14 ½” overall. The grip is constructed of black ebony and the knife is German silver and silver mounted with matching to the period fancy scabbard. The condition is good showing about 80% plus original etching on the blade with evidence of use and considerable sharpening. An early and desirable knife that is identified to New Orleans which was in the heart of the South and where the legend of James Bowie and his knife began. Est.: $7,000-$14,000.
