Rare Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone Park Map
Featured in this lot is a Rare and Original large, foldout map of Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park, 1903, provenance from the Francis P. Farquahar Papers in the Bancroft Library of UC Berkley (map is stamped). The map was prepared under the direction of Captain Hiram Chittenden, Corps of Engineers U.S.A. Chittenden is famously known as the officer in charge of road construction in Yellowstone during 1891-1893 and again from 1899-1904, and it was during his second tenure that he oversaw the construction of both the Melan arch bridge (known now as the Chittenden Memorial Bridge) across the Yellowstone River and the iconic basalt Roosevelt Arch at the north entrance to the park. This map was created at the end of Chittenden's service at Yellowstone National Park. The map highlights all the structures located at Mammoth Hot Springs and also includes the topographical and thermal features known in 1903.
The map is in amazingly preserved condition considering its age, slight splits are noted at some fold creases, age tanning and foxing is also noted. Measures 39"W x 43"L fully open, folded measures 5"W x 9"L
