Manufactured circa 1872-1873, this was one of approximately 7,000 manufactured. The Model 1871-1872 was the first non-conversion Colt cartridge revolver, and was a direct predecessor of the wildly successful Single Action Army. The top of the barrel is marked "-- ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA --", the left side of the frame is marked with the two July 1871 and 1872 patent dates, the cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas naval scene and "COLTS PATENT No "993" and the complete serial number "2993" is marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The loading gate is numbered "4296". The left side of the barrel has been period stamped "AB", "JH" on the left side of the barrel lug, "AB." on the left side of the grip and "AB." on the right, (significance unknown). Blade front sight and the rear sight is an integral notch on the breech end of the barrel. Fitted with one-piece varnished walnut grip and steel Army-style grip frame.

Condition: Fine. The revolver has 25% blue with the balance a brown patina with some flash pitting on the left of the barrel at the breech and the front face of the cylinder. The frame has 30% casehardened finish with the balance mainly shadows of the attractive original case colored pattern. The cylinder scene is 95% visible. There is some battering around the wedge on the right side of the frame and on the ejector housing. The grip is also fine with a small chip on each toe, a few dents on the bottom and overall a few minor dents and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
