The 480 Code was produced in late 1940 and represented the first true military contract pistol with approximately 7,250 produced. This earlier production P.38 has the high polish blue finish and brownish red Bakelite ribbed grips, with round lanyard ring on the left heel. The left slide of the side is marked "P.38", "480", followed by the serial number. This particular pistol is absent of the "480" code on the left side of the trigger guard bow. The serial number is marked on the front barrel flat and the left side of the frame. The locking block is marked "619" and has the correct proof marks on the sides. The "eagle/359" is marked on most of the parts. The lower left side of the magazine is marked "619" with two "eagle/359" proofs on the lower spine. The right side of the slide is stamped with two "eagle/359" Army acceptance marks on either side of a military firing proof. Complete with a black leather flap holster marked "? BECKER U. Co. / BERLIN /1940" over a faint eagle Waffenamt proof mark on the back.
BBL: 4 7/8 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 9 mm
Finish: blue
Grips: bakelite
Serial Number: 619
Condition: Very good. The pistol retains 80% plus bright, original blue finish with wear on the muzzle, front edge and high edges of the slide, some flaking and thinning on the slide, as well as some minor pitting on the left side of the muzzle and front edge of the slide. The front strap has a smooth mottled brownish gray patina. The grips are fine with a few light scuffs and scratches, and showing very little wear. The markings remain clear and crisp. Mechanically excellent. The holster is good with flex cracking and tight stitching. The 480 code P38s do not turn up for sale very often!
