This is an excellent example of an all original Colt Super 38 pistol that has the very desirable Swartz safety that we sold to the US Army in mid 1945. This pistol is accompanied by a Colt factory letter dated Jan 1985 that verifies this exact configuration and that it was shipped to the US Government on July 20, 1945 in a lot of 376 pistols. It was shipped to the Military Administration and Supply Division, Rosslyn Virginia. This 38 Super auto cartridge was actually developed in the late 1920s as an improvement over the old 45 ACP cartridge. It had a higher velocity with a medium size bullet that was more accurate and had more knock-down power than the 9mm, but had less recoil than the 45 ACP. The military never officially adopted the cartridge, however they did purchase the Super 38 in very limited quantities. This specific pistol is even rarer in that it employs the unique Swartz safety. This safety mechanism was actually developed in the mid 1930s as an improved safety device specifically for the 1911A1 pistol. It was implemented on production pistols in the late 1930s, however with the start of WWII this safety feature was dropped to reduce the cost and production time for the 1911A1. The left side of the slide has the two line Colt's address markings above their 1897-1913 patent dates with the right side marked "COLT/ SUPER 38 / AUTOMATIC" followed by the Colt Rampant horse logo. The left side of the frame has the ordnance inspectors stamp "G.H.D." for Guy H. Drewey, the Springfield Ordnance District Army Inspector. With the right side of the frame having been stamped with the small US Ordnance Corp. cross-cannon cartouche behind the grip. The upper left front of the trigger guard is marked with a small letter "R" over the Colt "VP" (verified proof) inside a small triangle, with the right side marked "73". It has the correct Colt blue barrel with polished chamber, that is marked on the left side: "COLT SUPER 38 AUTO". It if fitted with the standard fixed front and rear sight with the checkered slide lock, thumb safety, and arched main spring housing, along with the standard Colt wide spur, checkered hammer. It is fitted with a set of early Colt brown plastic checkered grips with large reinforcing ring around the grips screws with the reinforcing webs inside. The back sides of the grips have a number "9" and "11" mold numbers. This pistol is complete with one all blued magazine marked "COLT SUPER / 38 AUTO" on the base plate.
