Rare Documented Colt Single Action Army Flattop Target Model Revolver Shipped to Albert Foster, Jr.

Colt Single Action Army Flattop Target Revolver manufactured in 1896. The revolver has the distinctive flat top strap with dovetail mounted target rear sight and block mounted front sight with adjustable nickel silver blade. The revolver has the early blackpowder frame. The barrel, ejector housing, frame, loading gate, trigger guard and back strap have the Colt high polish commercial blue finish. The hammer is casehardened. The two piece black checkered hard rubber grips have the Rampant Colt in an oval at the top. The ejector rod has the late oval head and the hammer has borderless knurling on the spur. The top of the barrel is roll stamped "COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG. Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.". The caliber designation "38 COLT" is roll stamped on the left side of the barrel. "38" is stamped on the underside of the barrel in front of the frame. The left side of the frame is roll stamped with the Colt two line, three patent date marking followed by the circled Rampant Colt. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "4". The matching serial number is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. Colt manufactured approximately 925 Single Action Army Flattop Target Model Revolvers and only 122 of these revolvers were chambered for the .38 Colt cartridge. The accompanying factory letter verifies the caliber, barrel length, blue finish with the grips as "Not Listed" and that it was shipped as 1 of 2 to Albert Foster, Jr. at Colts New York Office on February 7, 1911.

Very fine as partially restored. The back strap has been repaired on the top rear, (hole plugged, welded), refinished and the balance of the revolver retains at least 90% of the bright original Colt high polish blue. The hammer retains 95% of the casehardened finish. The replacement grips are fine with the positioning pin being absent. All of the markings are crisp. Mechanically excellent. This is a historic documented example of a rare Colt Single Action Army Flattop Target Model Revolver.
