Manufactured in 1892. Pictured in both “The Book of Colt Firearms” (Sutherland & Wilson, 1972) and “Colt Firearms From 1836” (Serven, 1954). This revolver is one of only approximately 925 Flattop Target Model Single Action Army revolvers manufactured, and one of a very few of these that were made with the special elongated grips, making this revolver an extremely rare variation. This variation was made for only a short time and were a predecessor to the Bisley Model. This particular revolver is mentioned by serial number on page 259 of R.L. Wilson's "The Book of Colt Firearms" for having the extremely rare elongated grips and pictured on page 261, identified by serial number and again mentioning the rare long target grips and as having the checkered select walnut grips. It is also mentioned that the revolver was shipped in September of 1892 to New York dealers Hartley & Graham. It is also pictured on page 226 of Jim Serven’s “Colt Firearms From 1836”. The top of the barrel is marked with the one line address, "44 S&W" on the left side and the two line, three patent dates on the left side of the frame followed by the circled Rampant Colt. The left upper front of the trigger guard is marked with the letter "G" and "6" is on the right side rear. Matching serial numbers on the bottom of the frame and trigger guard. All blue finish, with niter blue trigger, hammer and notched rear sight, elevation adjustable blade front sight and fitted with extended checkered select walnut target grips. The accompanying factory letter verifies the serial number, barrel length, caliber,
"Checkered long wood stocks" and that it was a single-gun shipment to Hartley and Graham, New York, New York with shipment date illegible. The letter also states that “a further examination of the records suggest shipment in September or October of 1892An extremely rare Single Action Army, with documented provenance to two of the most prominent Colt collectors of the 20th Century, Robert Q. Sutherland and James (Jim) Serven.
