Rare Crow Beaded Cradle Board Papoose c. 1890
This is an exceptionally rare Montana Crow Late-19th Century Indian tanned hide and beaded cradle board papoose. The piece shows a wood backing frame that is completely covered in parfleche rawhide and Indian tanned hide sinew sewn and covered with period correct 19th Century glass trade seed beads. The cradleboard/cradle board/papoose is for a doll and shows the original doll still set into the piece. The doll is made from Indian tanned hide with trade cloth, real braided human hair, glass trade seed and petit seed beads, and hair pipe beads. The board itself shows a wonderful geometric whimsical pattern in rare colors of greasy Cheyenne pink white heart, semi-translucent red, and amber, along with petit seed beads in chalk white, cobalt, and red white hearts. The doll itself has seed beads in the same greasy Cheyenne pink or lilac white heart, petit seed beads in chalk white, blue, and greasy blue and pony beads in a red white heart (and porcupine quill beads or bone pipe beads). The side fringe and top strap, all in Indian tanned hide, has several wound glass padre sky blue trade beads. Provenance: From a large Western, Cowboy, and American History collection in Iowa. Measures overall 27.25"L with top strap and fringe by 6.5"W by 4.5"D.
