Civil War Morse carbine manufactured by the State Military Works in Greenville, South Carolina. The State Military Works manufactured approximately 1000 of these brass-frame, breech loading carbines in 1864. Most of the Morse carbines were issued to the South Carolina Militia; limited numbers of the carbines were issued to other Confederate forces. The carbine has a 20-inch round barrel with dovetail mounted brass front sight and a fixed iron rear sight. The brass frame has an integral trigger guard. The carbine has the Third Pattern iron breechblock and knurled iron lock plate. The stock and forearm are Butternut with cast brass buttplate and forearm tip. A straight shank iron ramrod with detachable brass tip is secured by a sheet brass ramrod pipe. The serial number, "683", is stamped on the underside of the frame in front of the trigger guard. The carbine, correctly, has no markings other than the serial number.
BBL: 20 inch round
Stock: wood
Gauge: 50
Finish: brass
Grips:
Serial Number: 683
Condition: Good. The carbine shows the wear associated with legitimate Confederate Civil War firearms. The barrel has a smooth, dark, patina. The brass frame has been repaired rear of the trigger guard and has a mellow aged patina. The balance of the frame has scattered, period, dents and scratches as well as minor casting flaws. The breech block is missing the hinge screw. The stock and forearm have been lightly sanded and varnished both are in very good overall condition. This is a solid representative example of a rare Confederate Morse breech loading carbine.
