This is a rare example of a Colt U.S. Walker Replacement Dragoon revolver that was manufactured in 1848. The Fluck Dragoons are believed to have been manufactured by Colt as replacements for Colt Walker Model revolvers that failed in service and were assembled with some re-worked Walker parts. Little documentation exists on these pistols. Serial numbers are believed to range from 2216-2515 and production is estimated to be about 300 revolvers. The revolver has a part-round/part-octagon barrel with nickel-silver front sight blade. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY" reading from the breech to the muzzle. The brass trigger guard is a re-worked, wide Walker pattern and the back strap is the longer pattern unique to the Fluck Dragoon revolver. The cylinder has the early oval stops and the pressure ridge behind the stops that is a feature of Fluck Dragoon revolvers is slightly apparent. "COLTS/PATENT/U.S." is stamped on the center of the left side of the frame. The location of this marking is a distinctive feature of Fluck Dragoon revolvers. The serial number "2480" is stamped on the bottom of the frame in very small numbers. The "2480" on the bottom of the barrel lug and trigger guard use larger numbers. The serial number on the trigger guard is stamped on either side of the trigger guard screw. The back strap is serial numbered "6462". What appears to be the serial number "2480" or "480" is stamped on the cylinder but is only partly legible. The number "6" is stamped on the top of the loading lever. The revolver is accompanied by a black leather full flap holster marked: "R C Overby" on the front of the flap. The holster appears to be hand-made and has a single, hand sewn seam with round toe, hand sewn belt loop and brass finial. The holster has the impression of a Dragoon revolver and appears to date from the late 1850s. Documents with the revolver state that R.C. Overby was a member of Company A, 3rd Virginia Cavalry during the Civil War.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch
Stock:
Gauge: 44 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 2480
Condition: Good. The barrel, loading lever, frame, cylinder and hammer have a mottled gray-brown patina with numerous small dents and scratches. The cylinder, frame and top of the barrel are lightly pitted. There is moderate flash pitting on the percussion nipples and rear face of the cylinder. The sides of the hammer have heavy flash pitting. The barrel markings are faint. No trace remains of the cylinder markings other than the partial serial number. The U.S. and patent markings on the left side of the frame are clear. The serial numbers on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and mismatched back strap (6462) are clear. The brass trigger guard and back strap have not been polished and have a mottled patina with moderate handling wear. The one-piece walnut grip has shrunk but is smooth and in good overall condition. The action is functional. The holster appears to be an original pre-Civil War holster with original markings on the flap and is in fair condition. The holster is flat with flex marks on the body and flap and flaking on the top of the flap and edges of the belt loop. The name on the holster flap is faint but legible. This is a solid example of a rare and very desirable variation of the Colt Dragoon revolver complete with a Civil War period holster with Confederate associations.
