Dagget circa 1798-99. Thebarrel is period script inscribed “Aetolian Waterloo” which was part of the emergency relief committee of Philadelphia and they were a special unit of light infantry who trained in a field at the end of WaterlooStreet. The word Aetolian was an ancient league which means “a confederacy of independence and the means to defend it”. In 1798 there were rumors of war with France and possible invasion. The congress andstates took action to form regiments and militias for our young countries defense. Miles was a well known contractor for muskets and pistols and this is the only blunderbuss of its type known by this early Pennsylvania gun maker.
