This is a Victorian era, 12th Lancers Third Pattern officer's lance cap. The body and peaks are of black patent leather with a wide gold lace band having a red stripe in the center around the waist. There are two gold lace bands on the body underneath the wide gold lace waist band and two gold lace bands at the lower edge. The front and rear peaks have three gold lace bands around the edge. The gilt rayed plate has the Prince of Wales's crest at the top over a lion standing on a crown over the Royal Arms of Great Britain over a "sphinx/EGYPT" badge with gilt "WATERLOO" badge on the right and gilt "PENINSULA" badge on the left. The top is red melton fabric with ribbed sides. There is gold bullion cord crossing the top and descending the angled corners. The gold bullion plume boss has a "VR" cypher. Above the plume boss emerging from the top is a black feather plume with a ring. Large lion's head ear bosses suspend a velvet backed chin chain. The front peak is lined with green skived leather, the sweat band is natural leather and there is a red silk lining. Inside the top is a "CATER & Co." paper label. With a gold bullion cap line and an additional 12th or Prince of Wales's Royal Lancers officer's lance cap plate. Rayed gilt plate with silvered plumes of the Prince of Wales at the top over silvered Royal Arms of Great Britain over a silvered "sphinx/EGYPT" battle honor between two gilt battle honor banners of "WATERLOO" and PENINSULA".

Condition: Very good, the patent leather shows crazing. The melton fabric has some insect tracking. The gilt components have a bright appearance with moderate wear on the high edges and some dark patina on the chin chain. The silver components have a dark aged patina with bright high edges. The sweat band has stains and the paper label is good. Cap line is excellent. Additional cap plate is very good with a generally bright appearance on the gilt components showing light wear and a few small shallow dents. The silvered components have a dark aged patina.
