RUGER OLD MODEL SUPER SINGLE-SIX CONVERTIBLE
REVOLVER. Cal. 22 LR / 22 Mag. S# 502388. Bbl. 4 5/8" with screw attached square faced ramped blade sight; frame mounted adjustable rear (missing blade). Mfg. 1964 (1964-1972) as 5 1/2" model having non "Inc." barrel markings. Originally part of the Henry Rodeschin collection (#91 subscription number); he was a long time Ruger employee in Newport who with his brother, William (also a long time Ruger employee) owned Rody's Gun Shop (less than 1/4 mile from the Newport factory). The original seller of the Rodeschin collection made note of its mismatched 22 Mag. cylinder and referenced John Dougan's book on Rugers, erroneously stating this was within a group of approximately 200 barreled frames in the 500000 serial number range that were damaged when the barrels were drilled for the front sights; the tapped hole was drilled through to the bore. As a salvage expediency, Ruger shortened the barrels to 4 5/8" while still being barreled frames. The barrels were cut "with a metal cutting band saw" plus the muzzle ends were "polished and exhibit traces of saw marks". This barrel has concentric circular marks consistent with lathe turning; no signs of saw marks or polishing. While the shortened barrel account is correct, this revolver is not one of them. Additionally, Dougan's book states the factory mistake happened in March of 1965. Serial numbers in Dougan's book for 1964 were 500000 to 504860, plus 504861 to 518070 in 1965, further substantiating that this is not part of the 1965 group. The serial numbers by the Red Eagle News Exchange Reference Guide are 500001 to 502607 for 1964 and 502608-517859 for 1965, supplying further verification. Grips are uncommon rosewood with black eagle medallions on standard XR3-RED grip frame. Black alloy ejector housing. No transfer bar safety update is present. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: extra fluted 22 Mag. cylinder numbered "941" (.005" longer than its 22 LR cylinder) in near excellent condition. Yellow and black BKH47 box with 1" wide buff colored aged masking tape over each end (to reinforce unbroken corners?) plus "Ruger 22cal. 4 5/8"" on tape at label end by black grease pencil. CONDITION: generally near excellent, including bore and grips. Very faint firing residue at breech end of barrel. Sides of hammer and lower rear sides of cylinder frame have traces of oxidation staining. Slight radial bright mark on face of 22 LR cylinder. Beginning thinning on left side of barrel at muzzle, plus small mark on front edge of ejector housing. Light mark on screw slot of front sight. Not Curio due to barrel shortening. (23-6091/NW). MODERN. $450-600.
