RARE Osage Spontoon Tomahawk War Club c. 1870-1880
This is a truly scarce phenomenal stylized spontoon war club tomahawk attributed to the Osage Native American Indians of Oklahoma and dating to circa 1870-1880’s. The piece was collected in the early 1900’s at the Osage Indian Reservation at Pawkuska. The tomahawk features an artful hand-forged iron spontoon head and blade, with exaggerated downward curled basal processes and a copper sunburst in the center of both sides of the blade. The center of the Revolutionary War style Spontoon shows a medium raised ridge down both sides, an authentic attributed found on documented tomahawks and dag knives. The piece is secured to the original solid wood haft handle with a leather gasket and brass trade tacks at the top showing artful linear brass trade tack designs along with a very attractive Buffalo Indian tanned hide gripping area wrap with hand-cut fringe secured with brass tacks and flows into the typical shaped beaded drop. The drop shows an Indian tanned hide and old red stroud trade clothe and blue stroud with a Buffalo track beaded design with all period correct glass trade seed cen beads in chalk white, cobalt, black and sky light blue. At the bottom shows the hand-cut long Buffalo Indian tanned hide and overall the drop measures 17 inches when hanging. This example is truly one of the finest artistic examples with beautiful beadwork and work of art Blacksmith forged head. Overall the piece measures 24 ¼ inches in length with a 8 ¾ inch long head.
