This is an early primitive implement Higbie Oats Cleaner cabinet from the 19th century. The cabinet is made from solid wood and features stenciled lettering. The piece is marked, "Higbie Patent Oats Cleaner Sold In New York By J.W. Fiske Iron Works 38...." J. W. Fiske & Company of New York City was the most prominent American manufacturer of decorative cast iron and cast zinc in the second half of the nineteenth century. The company was founded by entrepreneur, Joseph Winn Fiske (May 22, 1832 — October 20, 1903). He founded his business, at first in partnership with hardwareman Thomas W. Brown, in Boston (by 1862) and New York, December 1863. The "& Co." was dropped in 1862 in the business (placing this piece as being manufactured from 1862-1890's). The piece shows good condition. It measures 12.5" x 17" and is 69" tall. The cabinet does not show the inside mechanism, but is truly a wonderful early American Industrial Farming piece.
