The barbed wire telephone was a primitive but effective way of connecting rural homes in the late 19th century. To create a telephone line, the steel fence wires were connected to a telephone in a house or barn with a piece of smooth wire. The signal then passed through the smooth wire and along the length of the barbed wire, either to a switchboard or to other houses down the line 1. This system was used by American homesteaders to connect isolated homesteads to their rural neighbors and the rest of the world 1. The barbed wire telephone lines were not perfect, as they didn’t run seamlessly throughout the countryside. Overhead or buried wires were used to bridge communication over roads, ditches, and other gaps in fencing
