Presentation Inscribed Factory Engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver with Ivory Grips

This is an example of a Gustave Young factory engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver that was manufactured in 1858. The revolver has deluxe factory floral scroll engraving on a punch-dot background and floral accents executed by Master Engraver Gustave Young or his shop. The flawlessly executed scrollwork covers the lug and rear two thirds of the barrel, the loading lever flats, the frame, the trigger guard bow and the bottom and upper third of the back strap. In addition the back strap is inscribed "Capt. J.H.P. from YBE USA". The top and sides of the hammer are decorated with Young's characteristic wolf head motif. There is a dogs head on the left side of the barrel lug. With the exception of the hammer screw, the screw heads are engraved. The top barrel flat is presentation style scroll engraved "Saml Colt" surrounded by simple decorative line engraving and the left side of the frame is engraved "COLT'S/PATENT". The barrel is numbered "115212", the wedge is numbered "15212", the frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder are numbered "140044" and the cylinder pin is numbered "0044". The cylinder is roll engraved with the stagecoach holdup scene and marked "COLTS PATENT" over the serial number. The barrel and cylinder were blue, casehardened loading lever, frame and hammer and silver plated brass trigger guard and back strap. Fitted with a smooth one-piece ivory grip.

Very good as assembled. The metal surfaces have a dark brown mottled patina with some light spotting. The trigger guard and back strap retain 90% original silver plating which is beginning to darken with age. The muzzle shows evidence of some battering. The exposed brass has an aged patina. The cylinder scene is 80% visible. The grip is also very good with a few minor age cracks and a pleasant aged patina. The wedge is loose. The action needs work, the hammer does not hold a full cock. The markings and engraving are clear.
