Militia Staff officer's sword with Eagle pommel and brass scabbard c.1840-1860. The sword has a straight 27 inch double edged blade with central fuller. The blade is acid-etched and dry needle engraved with a Federal Eagle with "E. Pluribus/Unum" on a ribbon surrounded by floral sprays on the obverse of the blade and a panoply of arms surrounded by floral sprays on the reverse. The gold-plated brass hilt has a cast Eagle and Shield pommel, a chain guard extending form the pommel to the acorn-shaped quillon cross guard finial and shell-shaped languets. The ivory grip is carved with scrolls and shell-shaped panels. The gold-plated brass scabbard has two suspension bands with rings and is engraved with a federal eagle and shield surrounded by foliate designs. The blade has no visible maker's marks or proof marks.

Condition: Very fine. The very good blade has scattered patches of age discoloration and the engraving is light. The hilt retains 70% of the gold plated finish. The cross guard shows evidence of period repairs. The Eagle pommel is tarnished and with surface discoloration. The ivory grip is in excellent condition. The scabbard is in very good condition with several shallow dents and retains 40% of the gold plated finish.
