This Colt Model 1860 Army revolver was manufactured in 1870. The barrel, cylinder and back strap have the Colt high polish blue finish. The loading lever, frame and hammer are color casehardened and the brass trigger guard is silver-plated. The one-piece, walnut, grip has a varnish finish. The barrel has a nickel-silver front sight blade and is roll-stamped with the one-line legend: "-ADDRESS COL. SAML. COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-", The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy scene and "COLTS PATENT No". "ENGAGED 16 MAY 1843" is roll-engraved along the front edge of the cylinder. "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame. The full serial number "188646", is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, and back strap. The cylinder is stamped with the partial serial number "646". All of the visible serial numbers match.
BBL: 8 inch
Stock:
Gauge: 44 percussion
Finish: blue/caseharedened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 188646
Condition: Very fine as period, possibly factory refinished. The revolver retains about 60% of the factory quality blue finish on the barrel, cylinder and back strap. The finish appears to have flaked rather than worn and the majority of the remaining blue finish is bright and shows minimal wear. The loading lever, frame and hammer retain nearly 95% of the original casehardened finish with vivid case colors. The trigger guard shows traces of the original silver-plated finish and the exposed brass has a very attractive, untouched, patina. All of the markings on the barrel, frame and cylinder are crisp. The cylinder retains 95% or more of the roll-engraved Naval scene. The rear face of the cylinder and percussion nipples have light flash pitting. All of the cylinder pins are intact. The grip is in very fine condition with traces of the original varnish in protected areas and minimal handling wear. This is an attractive, original example of a post-Civil War Colt Model 1860 Army revolver.
